Fall Data Speaker Series brings Eric Kansa to campus
The Washington University Libraries are pleased to welcome Eric Kansa to campus on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 3pm to discuss his research in open and linked data. Kansa is coming to campus as part of the University Libraries’ ongoing Data Speaker Series.
Eric Kansa (PhD, Harvard University) leads development of Open Context (http://opencontext.org). Open Context provides an online platform for researchers to publish their primary field data and documentation as a peer-reviewed publication. His research interests explore Web architecture, service design, and how these issues relate to the social and professional context of the digital humanities.
In 2013, Kansa was honored as one of the White House’s Champions of Change for his work in open research. You may read more about his efforts in Indiana Jones and the Dungeon of Lost Data (http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/06/20/indiana-jones-and-dungeon-lost-data).
Kansa also researches policy issues relating to intellectual property, including text-mining and cultural property concerns. He actively participates in a number of Open Science, Open Government, cyber-infrastructure, text-mining, and scholarly user needs initiatives. Over the past three years, he has taught and practiced project management and information service design in the University of California, Berkeley School of Information’s Clinic program, and his ongoing work at UC Berkeley includes participation on Project Bamboo, a humanities and social science cyber-infrastructure initiative.
Sponsored by the University Libraries, the School of Arts & Sciences, and Chief Information Officer John Gohsman, the event will take place in the Olin Library Ginkgo Room (Level 1) and is free and open to the public. A reception will take place immediately afterwards. For more information, contact Cynthia Hudson-Vitale, Data Librarian, at email@example.com.
